Love

A Sonnet by Elan Kirshenbaum

A feeling which you can feel all day long,

Inside your heart a feeling rests its peace,

A feeling which will break you into song,

Love is a feeling that will never cease.

Love can be found in darkest of the times

And also in the brightest place on Earth,

A feeling which will break you into rhymes,

Love goes to death but always starts at birth.

Do you believe love is not hard to find?

Or does it take devotion and much thought?

Love must be sought without an empty mind,

Love must be found because it can’t be bought.

Don’t worry, love will find you soon enough.

You must stay focused; keep on fighting tough.

Hope and Faith

A Holocaust Poem by Elan Kirshenbaum

What is hope?

What is faith?

They’re the feelings that will keep you living

Even in times of great sorrow.

Hope. Faith.

When the Nazis took over in 1939,

Many people lost their hope and faith.

It was partly due to this

That they didn’t live another day.

Hope. Faith.

Evicted from their towns

And forced onto cattle cars,

The ones with hope and faith continued to live

While those who gave up perished.

Hope. Faith.

They were given numbers,

Tattooed into their skins,

A mark that made them feel inhuman.

But those with hope and faith lived on.

Hope. Faith.

Backbreaking labor and hardly any food to eat,

Illnesses and epidemics sprang upon them fast.

With the thought on their minds that they might be next to be gassed,

Those who continued to believe survived.

Hope. Faith.

And then it was all finally over

And they were all finally free.

The ones with hope and faith did not only survive the war,

But they lived on forever.

Hope. Faith.

Haikus

By Dovi Muchnik

Here are four haikus, each three lines in length:

Food is wonderful,

Delicious and tasty,

My favorite? cake!

 *********************************************************

Pie is good to eat,

It is good morning and night,

Yummy in your gut.

 *********************************************************

School's a crazy place,

It’s work all day and all night,

We've got to escape!

 **********************************************************

Gameboy, a handheld,

I play with it the time here,

Can't play too much though.

Limericks

By Jonathan Goldman

Here are three limerick poems, each five lines in length:

There once an ugly old frog,

Who was self-proclaimed king of the bog,

When a heron, wading near,

Switched its neck to high gear,

WHOOSH! The frog got away at a jog.

***************************************************************

There was a young bochur from Queens,

Came to Rambam one day in his jeans,

Rav Yotav said, "Oy!"

What a scandal, Vuh voy!

Detention!  He hasn't learned beans!

****************************************************************

Today, when I woke, snow was deep,

I wanted to go back to sleep,

But they didn't close school,

Which I thought was quite cruel,

How I wish I was still counting sheep.
